How to Pick the Perfect Shoes for Walking Toddlers

The moment your little one starts walking, everything changes. They are constantly going everywhere and anywhere, and are busy exploring literally everything.

Up until this point, shoes are pretty much just a cute accessory for your baby. But once the walking begins, having a shoe that your child can learn to walk in is a must.

These tips will help you pick out the perfect shoes for your newly walking toddler—ones that will keep your little one’s foot safe and comfy, while allowing them to master the art of the toddler walk.

How to Pick the Perfect Shoes for Walking Toddlers

1. Look for Durability + Flexibility

When your toddler starts go go going, having a shoe that can keep up is essential. You want something that is strong and durable, but you also want something that’s flexible enough to move with your child. If you go with anything too “firm”, you’ll likely be watching your child trip and fall all over the place. Pick anything that’s too “soft”, and your toddler will run the risk of having their foot hurt, especially when playing outside.

Picking a shoe that’s the best of both worlds, such as these Surprize by Stride Rite shoes that we picked up at Target, is definitely the goal. We love these particular shoes because they have rounded toes & traction pods to reduce falls and tumbles, and flexible outsoles to fit the shape and movement of our girl’s feet.

2. Easy Closures for You (And Your Toddler!)

One thing I was guilty of with my first child was buying really elaborate shoes for her to wear. Laces for days, tricky to get on and off…you know the type. But with toddler #2? Nah, y’all. I smartened up and went for shoes that were cute but more importantly practical.

One of the big keys to having a practical shoe is making sure they are easy to put on and take off. No one wants to spend 15 minutes wrestling with their toddler just to get their shoe laces tied. One of the easiest closures to look for is a velcro strap, like the ones on our beloved Surprize by Stride Rite shoes. Getting the shoes on and off is a cinch.

And an added bonus of super easy closures? Your little one can practice putting the shoes on by themselves. Yep! It always amazes me just how capable toddlers are. Watching them take it upon themselves to get dressed and put their shoes on is always exciting to watch. (Especially when you see how proud they are of themselves after accomplishing a task.)

3. Keep it Comfy

While there’s definitely a time and a place to break out the super cute adult-like shoes for your little one, they just aren’t ideal for everyday wear—especially when your toddler is learning how to walk. So save the tiny heels for picture days and family weddings. Go with something a little more comfortable for your toddler’s every day shoe.

Surprize by Stride Rite shoes are a dream when it comes to comfort for your child’s foot, thanks to the memory foam footbed that can be found in each pair. They also have a generous fit for most medium & wide widths, which is super important because when it comes to shoes being comfortable, fit is key.

Such a great post!! Many people don’t realize how important great quality shoes are for little ones. Both of my boys lived in Stride Rite shoes for their first year, once they started walking. I love how you can get so many different specialty sizes and they offer different types for different walking stages. I always recommend Stride Rite! Both of my boys had extra wide feet and Stride Rite was the only place we could find shoes that fit properly.

I have a little nephew and he hates shoes. He always walks with his socks. I definitely think it’s about the flexibility of his shoes!

That makes complete sense—those really stiff shoes are SO hard for the little ones to walk in. Flexible shoes work wonders for their little feet. 🙂
