road trip pregnant

Traveling while pregnant brings with it a unique set of challenges. And, honestly? It can be downright stressful.

A big key to reducing the stress that comes with pregnancy travel is to plan ahead.

If you’re heading out on a road trip during your pregnancy, this list of essentials will help keep you fully prepared:

Road Trip Essentials for Pregnant Mamas-to-Be

1. Comfy Pillow and Blanket

Sitting in a car for extended periods of time can be uncomfortable in general. Throw in pregnancy and you’re on a whole different level.

Up the comfy as much as possible by bringing along your favorite pillow and blanket to snuggle with while you’re on the road. For bonus points, throw in a pair of those really fluffy socks as well and thank me later. 😉

2. Plenty of Water

Hydration during pregnancy is a must, must, must! Unfortunately, getting the amount of water that you need when you’re on the road can sometimes be tricky.

Make sure that you stock up on bottles of water (or find a really great reusable one, like the one I use regularly while road tripping and breastfeeding) before heading out on your adventure.

3. Healthful Snacks

There are so many great superfoods to eat during pregnancy—why not bring a few of them on your road trip?

Nothing is worse than being stuck with only gas station/fast food options, so stock up on healthful snacks like fresh fruits and veggies, unsalted nuts, and whole grain crackers.

4. Prenatal Multi-Vitamins with DHA

Do not—I repeat, DO NOT—forget to bring your prenatal vitamins with you on your road trip, as they are an absolute must for a healthy mom and a healthy baby.

Make sure your are fully stocked up on a great prenatal multi-vitamin before you hit the road, such as Nature Made® Prenatal Multi + DHA. I love to get a big ol’ bottle from our local Sam’s Club to make sure I’m fully prepared.

Nature Made Prenatal Multi + 200 mg DHA are guaranteed to meet Nature Made’s high quality standards. They are made from carefully selected ingredients under strict manufacturing processes, have clinically-proven absorption of folic acid and iron, convenient one-per-day dosage, and come in an easy-to-swallow softgel.

These vitamins have you covered on all of those essential pregnancy vitamins and minerals, including Folic Acid (which is an important B Vitamin for pregnant women, as it plays a critical role in the proper development of the baby’s nervous system†), Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Iodine, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D3.† They also provide 200 mg of DHA, which may help support fetal brain and eye development.

Additionally, they are free from lots of things that you DON’T want in a prenatal vitamin, such as synthetic dyes, yeast or starch, artificial flavors, and gluten.

After you grab a bottle from Sam’s Club (they are located with all of the other vitamins and supplements), make sure to take one a day with food for the duration of your pregnancy and the months following.

5. Something to Distract You

Whether that something is a book, music, Sudoku, or a show to watch—make sure to bring something to take your mind off of the fact that you’re sitting in a car.

Looking out the window gets old after about 10 minutes, and having something to focus on (besides the fact that you’re super uncomfortable) will work wonders for your mental sanity while road-tripping.

These tips are perfect for a road trip while pregnant. Getting comfortable in a long car ride is so tough especially the further along you are. We remember bringing a pillow along for our back too! And of course all the snacks. 😉

Such great tips. It’s easy to remember to pack goodies for the kids but we often forget about mom. Having water, food and extra pillows make traveling while pregnant so much easier.

I had to stop driving my car around 33 weeks pregnant with #3. I could not sit without so much hip pain and could only be a passenger. Great round up of ideas to get you through those long drives.
